The NEAR Approach

Logo with green leaves and text 'NEAR Counseling & Wellness'.

NEAR is both personal and philosophical. The name comes from the initials of my daughters, a meaningful reminder of the importance of connection and the ways we grow through our relationships.

It also reflects a central belief in my work: healing often begins when we move closer to ourselves. In our work together, we slow down and begin paying attention differently, exploring not only thoughts and experiences but also the physical and emotional responses that may have developed over time through stress, relationships, loss, or difficult life experiences. This process can deepen understanding of how you have learned to adapt, what may no longer be serving you, and what it might look like to move through life differently.

At its core, this work is about reconnecting aspects of ourselves that can become separated over time. NEAR aims to bridge:
• mind and body
• insight and action
• inner experience and daily life
• automatic responses and conscious choice
• individual healing and relational connection

Somatic simply means “relating to the body.” In practice, this may include noticing patterns such as tension, breath, posture, overwhelm, numbness, or shutdown, and exploring how these responses may have developed over time as ways of coping, adapting, or protecting yourself.

Sessions may include:
• supportive discussion and reflection
• simple breathing techniques
• gentle movement
• awareness of physical sensations and emotional responses
• visualization or relaxation techniques

Many clients come to me feeling like something in their life needs to change, but they are not always sure where to begin. In our work together, we create space to slow down, explore, and better understand the patterns that may be keeping you from the life you truly want.

The somatic psychotherapist views the body and mind as essentially interconnected and investigates how the person expresses themselves in posture, gesture, muscular patterns, emotional patterns and physiological arousal; and then helps facilitate self-regulation processes when the body-mind has become imbalanced. -Manuela Mischke-Reeds
